Every public agency is obligated to maintain an internal auditor. The obligation concerning the Ministry of Public Security is firmly anchored in the Public Security Law. The Internal Auditor and Ombudsman Unit consists of four sub-units each with a specialized task:
Internal auditing: Auditing of the operations of the Israel Police (IP) and the Israel Prison Service (IPS)
Public Complaints office: Examines complaints from the public that have been sent to the Minister, the Director-General and the Ministry's internal auditor
Operational auditing unit: Operational auditing in specific fields in units of the IP and the IPS for the purpose of obtaining an up-to-date picture on the operations of field units
Prisoners Complaints Officer: Deals with complaints and allegations regarding offenses committed by wardens.
