The Harel Program for Security and Excellence in Education
The Harel Program for Security and Excellence in Education
Various projects for the reduction of violence have been tried over the years in Alfei Menasheh’s schools ― to no real avail. The violence and the behavior problems remained unaffected, at about the average level for the whole country, leaving the teaching staff feeling frustrated and often helpless in face of the students and parents who were at the root of the problem.
In one more attempt to change things, Metzila (the Ministry sponsored Public Council for the Prevention of Violence in Israel) and the Alfei Menasheh local government council took the decision to go with the Rolider program. Prof. Amos Rolider of Israel’s Emek Yizre’el College is the initiator of this ‘total-institution’ program, in which every aspect of a school’s efforts and activity, and every unit of the students’ school (and even non-school) time is redirected to deterring violence, creating a better atmosphere in the school, and advancing learning standards.
