A night-time activity vehicle operates in Kfar Saba, offering teenagers alternative pastime activities while wandering the streets during the night. The initiative includes municipal workers and volunteers specially trained for this work, representatives of the Israel Anti Drug Abuse Foundation and the local Metzila coordinator, all whom reach concentrations of teenagers twice a week and open a mobile youth club which attracts dozens of youngsters.
The mobile clubs are designed to respond to the large amount of youth who prefer "hanging out" with their friends in the streets and public parks over taking part in an organized framework.
The club operates between 10 P.M. and 2 A.M. and opens moon-light clubs in the more popular areas of the youngsters. The staff lay out mats, open an offhand café and offers various table and board games. At the same time, the staff befriends the youngsters and speaks openly with them.
Every mobile club has already attracted 30 regulars who show up to every meeting, including new immigrants, Israelis, religious and seculars. Participation requires refraining from smoking and drinking alcohol. The staff also wanders around, spreading the word about the activities.
Two months after the start of the program, there has been a significant decline in smoking in the area, and the youth continue to show up, consulting and sharing with the professional staff at hand.
"The program is a unique opportunity for teenagers to speak with adults who actually listen to them, while forming a mutual trust between the two sides and creating a real connection between these group of youngsters and professional personnel" said Uri Tal, the Metsila coordinator in Kfar Saba.
