Ramleh Scouts: "Apposing violence isn't popular? It is now!"
26/2/07
The 'Achva' tribe of the Ramleh Scouts reached the peak of their city-wide violence prevention activities with a grand event declaring "'Achva tribe saves the city!". The event took place in the cultural hall in Ramleh, and was attended by dozens of the 'Achva' scouts, parents, educators and "Metsila" representatives. The event was sponsored by the Ramleh municipality, "Metsila" and the Israel Scouts.

The head of the Education and Youth Department in the municipality, Gilad Goldman, got the evening started by congratulating the young scouts, their counselors and parents for the initiative, and the "Metsila" coordinator, Yoav Nadav for his violence prevention activities in the city. He thanked "Metsila" the Community and Crime Prevention Division in the Ministry of Public Security for their contribution to the minimization of violence.

"Metsila" regional director, Beni Hakimi, called for the continuation of the cooperation with municipality in operating violence prevention programs.
During the evening, the scouts put on a singing and dancing show promoting "Say no to violence!"

The 'Achva' Scout Tribe has been active in Ramleh for over a decade and consists of 150 scouts. Over the past year, there has been an increase in violent occurrences between the young scouts and other children in the city, which led to a request for cooperation with "Metsila". A joint decision was made by the local "Metsila" coordinator, the counselors and the scouts themselves to have an intense 6-week program focusing solely on violence prevention.

As part of the program, all of the tribe scouts, both younger and older, took part in violence prevention activities, one of which was a community service program volunteering in different parts of the city in order to become more familiar with the local community. 7th, 8th and 9th graders operated clubhouses for young children from broken homes who suffered from domestic violence.

The older scouts, along with the counselors took part in workshops on drama and psychodrama in which various violent situations were discussed, imparting tools to confront social pressure, conflicts and violent acts. They also took part in a laughter workshop focusing on expressing positive energy.

As the final event drew closer, the excitement grew and the scouts expressed their hopes for the future: "As part of our ideological and educational vision, we decided to promote the issue of violence prevention. We believe that we have to be a positive example for the rest of the city, and if we continue in the right path, we will create a better world".
