Suicide on the Net: the Internet and the IP Save Lives
Author Name: Shimon Sharabany
Theme: Policing
Publication Type: Innovation Exchange No. 12
Publication Date : 01/01/2006
Abstract:

Most of us identify the Israel Police (IP) with its classic policing missions: combating crime, from violent crime to white-collar crime, and lending the armed forces and the secret services a strong hand in their battle against terrorism. But the IP’s Computer Crimes Section also has its place in the front line, investigating criminality in this sphere, daily tackling computerized crime in all its guises ― theft, incitement and blackmail, fraud and forgery, hacking and infiltrating viruses, even illegal gambling, money laundering and pedophilia.

But beyond all this regular crime-fighting work the Section’s officers have added a new vital and sacred role ― saving individual lives. They locate and help rescue people who have reached a state where they are ready to take their own life.
