Minister Aharonovitch presents the outline of his policy for the Israel Police
20/5/09

The Minister of Public Security, Yitzhak Aharonovitch, assembled the senior officers of the Israel Police on Monday, May 18, and presented the outline of his policy for the Israel Police.

Policy outlines:

  1. Increase in police salaries – properly compensating the field officers by updating allocated budgets.
  2. Cancelation of the regional command level and reinforcement of police deployment- efficiency steps that will manifest itself with allocation of resources towards local police forces, erection of new police stations, intensifying police presence within the cities and improvement of the service given to the citizens by additional manpower and minimization of organizational bureaucracy.
  3. Integration of the National Traffic Police (NTP) into local city forces, with the understanding that the NTP is the most qualified traffic enforcement force in Israel. By broadening the NTP's focus from only interurban roads to also inner-city roads, the local police force will have greater resources to direct towards crime and violence.
  4. Broadening the responsibilities and authorities of the Israel Border Police in rural and agricultural areas, and implementing 'green' police stations – police stations which operate only in the field of agricultural crime.
  5. Transfer of the legal prosecution to the office of the State Prosecutor and the Ministry of Justice – as part of the separation of powers in Israel.
  6. Making the Israel Witness Protection Authority operational by early 2010.
  7. Establishment of independent local police stations that will operate only within the jurisdiction of their city and will by under the guidance of the mayor.
  8. Extending the "City without Violence" program from the 12 cities it is implemented in today, to 12 other cities in addition.
  9. Double the amount of field teams in the Lahav 433 unit and the intensifying the battle against crime organizations.
  10. Increase the number of recruitment slots for minorities for the Israel Police.
